Description
Prince "Let's Work"
An overlooked gem from the Controversy album commanding you to dance - work it!!
Death From Above 1979 "Sexy Results (MSTRKRFT Edition)"
One of my favorite songs from last year (actually came out right at the tail end of 05).
Velvet Underground "Waiting For My Man" (Backstage Sluts Remix)
It's hard to imagine Lou Reed's voice riding over these funky cranked-out analog bass lines but damn if this track doesnt work. I always loved the original and now I love this version too. God bless the sluts!
Gabriel & Dresden "Dangerous Power" (Discount Rhino Remix)
Love the song, love the remix, wasn't feeling the vocals so much so I cut together this little edit (+ namecheck from Uffie at the end).
Earth People "Reach Up To Mars"
I moved to New York in 1990 and Mars was the club of the moment. Area was on its way out, Danceteria was long gone and the Sound Factory was just starting to come into its own. Mars was a multi-story industrial space deep in the heart of the meat packing district. Each floor had a different kind of music with lots of nooks and crannies to get lost (or whatever) in. The main floor (playing stomping 80s house tracks just like this one) had one entire wall covered with bass speakers facing another wall with 100+ working lava lamps.
Right around this time clubs in New York would hire men and women to just walk around the crowd totally nude. I'll never forget my friend Chris Flores, who had just moved to NY a few months earlier, telling me "you know you read about it in magazines, but nothing can prepare you for when youre sitting on a sofa talking to your date and then suddenly a totally nude guy plops down next to you!"
Anyway this track by Pal Joey was huge at the time but I only recently was able to track down a copy. Reach up!
BLV "Boogie Tonite" (Seamus Haji Big Love Remix)
This thumping, straight-ahead track reminds me of classic groups like First Choice or Loleeta Holloway (with a little help from the Black Legend rhythm!). And I love that its about the great feeling of when you find a new club that you know will not let you down ... a place where you can go and just get totally lost in the music.
Futureheads "Worry About It Later" (Switch Remix)
Switch is on fire right now. I love this remix, the bass drum sound is so amazing ...
Benedict X "A Bit Boxy"
An extreme remix of Switchs epic club anthem A Bit Patchy (which was a reworking of the Incredible Bongo Bands Apache, which Afrika Bambattaa called the #1 hip-hop song of all time) cut with loops from DJ Godfathers Bang The Box.
Lady Sovereign "A Little Bit Of Shhh" (Adrock Remix)
Nice remix of Lady Sov from Adrock. Stomping!
