Biography
Hip Hop DJ since 1987, flipping all kinds of music into skillfully crafted mixes. Born in Tuscon, Arizona, USA. Lived in various parts of the US, Sao Paulo, Brasil, and for the past 15-or-so years, Tokyo, Japan.
A key figure in Japan's DJ culture, spinning at major clubs in Tokyo and all parts of Japan north to south. Discography includes three solo albums of part instrumental hip hop songs, part rap productions showcasing Japan's finest MCs and from the US, the Living Legends crew. Living Legends is family.
For the past three years or so, I've been using Numark CD-Xs on stage, playing strictly off of CD-Rs that I create in Pro Tools.
The Numarks let me scratch and otherwise interact with the sound in the same way that I have been for 20 years--thru a spinning 12" piece of vinyl. The move to CD has opened up an infinite realm of possibilities that was just not approachable using wax. 20 years of bottled up ideas and ambitions are flowing thru my Pro Tools into
CD-Rs and back to my hands thanks to the CD-Xs.
The resulting mixes are somewhere between old-school mega-mixes,
"mash-ups", house-style long mixes, and turntablist scratch collages.
I also find that building a mix in Pro Tools has started resembling what goes on when i make a track in Pro Tools. Chop chop chop, smack it up, flip it, rub it down, i can make anything dope.
I don't get out of Japan very often to DJ, and my label's strictly domestic distribution for my CDs, so I hope that xStreamist lets a few heads in far-away parts of the world to have the chance to check the work I'm putting in for the future of the hip hop dj.
